Brand66

Just what the world needs: another blog from another self-important design guru. Brand66 is a design discussion presented by — me, Michael Rylander. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to work on some the world's great brands, like Apple, Sony, BMW, Fortune, and American Express.

Mouse tracking

This ingenious app runs in the background while you work at your computer. By tracking the times when the pointer is moving rapidly and the times it spends standing still, it creates an unique image. You can choose to have your map on a plain white background, or superimposed over a screenshot of your desktop. Some excellent examples can be enjoyed over at Flickr. Get the free Mac app here.

Here's an image I made after working an hour and then colorizing the result:

Jackson Pollock meets air traffic control radar. I can't wait for the color version. Wow. And I was wondering what to do with my afternoon.

And it works in the background, just like air traffic controllers do when monitoring flights. : )

Michael, I did some analysis of your mouse tracks, and I can tell you're watching Rush Limbaugh on your Mac. Shame on you. You should be at the Sarah Palin site instead.

Love this biomechanical input recorder, it's just what I needed. That way I can justify my time away from the canvas by seeing what kind of drawing develops during the day while I'm goofing at the computer. Every artist should have this app on their Mac.
