Cubewich

Can't solve it? Then eat it. The Rubix Cubewich contains blocks of pastrami, kielbasa, pork fat, salami, and two types of cheddar.

Model boat

Swedish artist Michael Johansson made this life-size dinghy "model kit" from a real boat and related equipment. The pieces are fastened together by a welded tubular frame and painted a uniform gray. Michael has done several of these 1:1 "model" kits made from life-size original objects.

Feline furniture

If one day you find yourself reincarnated as a tabby, pray that your owner is wise this striking piece of furniture from Case Real. Not only will you have the best seat in the house for watching Garfield, but your owner will have an unobstructed view of you coughing up that hairball.

Rephotography

Rephotography is the act of repeat photography of the same site, with a time lag between the two images; a "then and now" view of a particular area. Some are casual, usually taken from the same view point but without regard to season, lens coverage or framing. Some are very precise and involve a careful study of the original image.

The founding work in this style was the Rephotographic Survey project, conceived in 1977 by the project's chief photographer, Mark Klett. (I was fortunate to be able to work with Mark and Without Walls to design an interactive exhibit for the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.)

Long the domain of professionals, rephotography is now mainstream, as you can see in these beautiful compositions.

Selleck waterfall sandwich

This one takes the cake panini for sheer randomness. Here's the concept: Tom Selleck, waterfall, sandwich. Go with it. I can't even begin to guess what type of pharmaceuticals were involved in its creation, but the site deserves be in the running for Niche Blog of the Year.

Commenter Naju sums it up: "I like to think of the internet as a god-like being... it gives us exactly what we deserve, no more and no less. The Internet just decided that we deserve Tom Selleck, a waterfall, and a sandwich, over and over again, in perpetuity.

Rare plant discoveries

Somewhere in Norm Magnusson's family tree I would expect to find the Darwins on one side, and a clan of artists on the other. This might partly explain the quirky and botanically charming series of images that make up his latest project. I find these nature paintings cheerful and childlike, while the captions lend a pseudo-scientific air. It reminds me of something that one of my favorite artists, Andy Goldsworthy, might attempt (after a few pints of Guinness).
