Brand66

Just what the world needs: another blog from another self-important design guru. Brand66 is a design discussion presented by — me, Michael Rylander. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to work on some the world's great brands, like Apple, Sony, BMW, Fortune, and American Express.

Batcave goes Lego

Using more than 20,000 Lego blocks, and weighing in at over 100 pounds, Carlyle Livingston II and Wayne Hussey have created a Gotham masterpiece. To accomplish this super-heroic feat, the duo spent six weeks designing, engineering, and snapping. Highlights include working lights, a motorized turntable for the Batmobile, a rotating costume and weapons wall, and an elevator for the Batplane. Diehards can check out their photoset on Flickr.

Aviary

I’ve not yet visited The Aviary but the reviews and photos are amazing. They claim to give same attention to drinks as a four-star restaurant does to food. Produce and herbs are sourced daily, and the brand of spirit is less important than its actual flavor. A state-of-the-art libation kitchen is where the innovation happens.
Imagine:  the Blueberry ($20), a rye-based drink that arrives in a carafe stuffed with a mélange of fruit and flower petals, or the Rooibos ($18), a gin-based concoction that bubbles in a vacuum-pot brew of lavender, citrus peel, lemon balm, and crushed almonds…

Bulbs with brains

Light bulbs have been around in some shape or from since the late 1800s. They’re often bright, but rarely smart. Until LIFX. Soon you be able to control the color, brightness and state of your bulbs easily via your iPhone or Android phone.

Eye candy

Mark Laita’s photographs never fail to light up my rods and cones. And if you have the pleasure of working with him in person, you’ll be amazed how effortless he makes it all seem. Witchcraft indeed.

Bespoke innovations

Bespoke Innovations was founded in 2009 by an industrial designer and an Orthopedic Surgeon who wanted to bring more humanity to people who have congenital or traumatic limb loss. Their goal is to enable patients to emotionally connect with their prosthetic limbs, and wear them confidently as a form of personal expression.

HAL grows legs

California-based Double Robotics has invented a way to turn your iPad into a roving robot. For only $1,999 you can move, explore, peek, scare, and speak with with someone half-way around the world. Double, which its maker claims offers the “most elegant way to be somewhere else in the world without flying there,” consists of a pair of wheels, a battery-powered motor, an adjustable pole and an iPad holder. The whole thing is controlled remotely by someone using Double’s app on another iPad.
