Brand66

Just what the world needs: another blog from another self-important design guru. Brand66 is a design discussion presented by — me, Michael Rylander. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to work on some the world's great brands, like Apple, Sony, BMW, Fortune, and American Express.

375 degree cookbook

Delicious idea: “The Real Cookbook.” An edible volume designed by Hamburg Germany based design studio Korefe.

Tyvek footwear

Tyvek is the material of choice for FedEx pouches, house wrap, hazmat suits — and for students of ancient history — CD sleeves. I’ve been using wallets made of this high-density material for a while. It’s super strong but has a thin profile. Now Civic Duty footwear is getting in on the polyethylene goodness. Their line of shoes are made with glues and dyes that are environmentally friendly and their packaging is made of recycled materials.

OCD iOS

It’s a known fact that Apple is the obsessive-compulsive poster child of the computer world. But their disorder is our gain. Case in point: the upcoming iOS 6, a polished refinement of the existing mobile interface. Among the hundreds of new features is this smile-inducing gem: the reflection on the volume slider actually changes as you angle the phone (it uses your iPhone’s acceleromter to pull this off). Pointless? Perhaps. But I love it.

JAQK

I admire the simplicity and elegance of these wine lables for JAQK Cellars in California. Designed by Viet Huynh.

Birth to bingo in 873 images

Clever video for Getty Images. With bingo there is hope.

Eau de New Book

“The smell of a freshly printed book is the best smell in the world.”
Karl Lagerfeld

Though many could argue with Karl, I would have to agree that a new book is rather intoxicating.

Wallpaper Magazine commissioned master perfumer Geza Schoen to create a fragrance based on the smell of books to be part of the Wallpaper magazine Handmade exhibition in Milan. Hidden inside the pages of a book, Paper Passion is accompanied by texts from Karl Lagerfeld, Günter Grass, Geza Schoen and Tony Chambers.
