Daniel Douke

The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento is hosting a wonderful exhibit by artist David Douke. “Bytes of Reality” features paintings well-known boxes on canvas. Douke’s trick is to stretch his canvas over a very deep, box-like frame so that he can paint on five sides. At first glance, the boxes appear to be simply found objects—à la Marcel Duchamp. But on upon closer inspection, we see that every detail is rendered with precise detail: text, packaging tape, smudges, and dents.

These paintings are so unique and interesting. I've never seen anything quite like them. As noted they definitely are very reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp's found object work but the backside of the canvas proves to be a nice little surprise for the viewer. The old iMac box is wonderful! Right down to the "dirt lines of the corrugated box". Thanks for sharing!
