Brand66

Just what the world needs: another blog from another self-important design guru. Brand66 is a design discussion presented by — me, Michael Rylander. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to work on some the world's great brands, like Apple, Sony, BMW, Fortune, and American Express.

The fog of mourning?

Anyone who has set foot inside an Apple Store has smelled it: the scent of absolute perfection. The world’s most successful retail spaces also happen to be the epitome of flawlessness. Every detail is labored over, from the grain of wood in the tables to the shade of glass used for the store fronts.

It can’t be easy being the most buttoned-up kid in the mall. Make a tiny mistake and the other stores snicker and talk behind your back. A piece of litter that would go unnoticed in Pottery Barn sticks out like sore thumb in the Apple Store. It’s only because Apple has raised the bar so high that their flubs are, well, flubbier.

Case in point: Yesterday, a friend stopped by the store in Corte Madera (note the spelling) and was handed this business card. Oops.
